Carver Academy welcome cancel happy to have you here until welcome you thank you very much what is a pleasure to be here it's a pleasure to have you you're beautiful thank you thank your heart not tell us up all the good news about George half Academy with George Washington Carver Academy is sitting in the heart of Highland Park Highland Park is have some changes with it yes and so because I am also from Highland Park I am come on now 10-day Liberty Elementary come on now and went to Henry Ford middle school then graduated from Holland Park my mama is so well tended to versity of Michigan mercy and then got two masters from Marygrove come on now so I am excited praise God I intend to create make George Washington Carver the new Private School Highland Park I love it so you know when I was growing up I'm a native detroiter but I the days when having Park was honored Highland Park was out on the iron it was a top performing School District that's right when I was in holler Mark Highland Park sent me to Lansing to be lieutenant governor and on the government governor they sent me to Japan to be a foreign exchange say that so at Highland Park we had we was on the tennis team 9 Mile pause president of the student class we had everything we had extracurricular activities and pride to be in Highland Park because they prepare Parker's to be exit and Highland Park had a wonderful of program back in the day that allowed the Highland Park citizen Goten Highland Park Community College for free absolutely and my affect my mother-in-law got her Nursing degree I love Highland Park Community College closed what has up some of us thought that close it was a racist move by the governor Engler to close Highland Park for nothing it was graduating the highest number of professional nurses and have program that provided the largest number of nurses recommunity so why would you close it made no sense whatsoever but you know I remember the day is win. It was just a nobody know part of the challenge facing the city had to do with the corporate community disinvesting quiet left hand piping money cuz they got in touch right off I remember that there's a lot of high-paying middle-class jobs NN Ford Motor Company's first plant was and how to pack the first freeway in the nation Davidson ran through Highland Park what about a lot of things superintendent blessing I've been a volunteer to from time to time of the school with the girls Rites of Passage program I have to facilitate some turkey donations to will it rain the families in need down through the years and I just thought I'd also volunteered at Renaissance Cass Tech Burton School some of the school's called me Big Mama I don't mind going and you know when your grandmother is this good to play that role bringing them eternal spirit into the school think about Highland Park we've always been up Village and wasn't scared of kids I had a mom and having part God Rest her so clean Mother me know Mark it was great great leader and on the Highland Park be counseling with the Highland Park Community College sister-in-law Malcolm X who was just wonderful one anchor of the the matriarchs in Highland Park I know about the Highland Park mothers club in Highland Park is who have the down through the years making sure the children steered in the right direction and that's what you're doing at George Washington Carver Academy talk about increased amount of program Dimock achievement excellent and so we had a meet and greet yesterday with the staff right now we had a good time but the focus I told him question for every can we do will be what is best for key and if what the program is answers that question what says 4K then that's what we're doing come on and if is not best for kids no matter how she ditional how great it is that's right off we went to school because we wanted to make a difference in the lives of children and every time you get that student loan bill you should be reminded hey why you and so what we have to ensure that everything we doing from the time they enter the door yes you're somebody exact the movie love the young people the more they feel invested young people can tell from the way you look at that exact but you love them right now if you want to nurture them whether you see genius and them are not exec ignite excellence in them I challenged them those that are not from our community that you see that's right judge them by the leader and the change agent that they can be and the truth is our all didn't have the gift of Genius we do have our job to pull the layers back to pull the layers that is put gifts and everyone exactly yeah it was gift Educators who told me you should apply for a scholarship to Japan come on now I have full scholarship from Toyota Motor Company magnificent address to help open my eyes praise God how to beat NFC championship and that's what I say what's best for kids famous Bloomfield Birmingham Troy I want to it they have a right that's right and our forefathers died is important that they understand that education is the passport that it's a lot of things going on and yes there's all kind of stores but if you have education if you've been taught how to be a critical night now if you've been taught to believe in you can lose a job and get another job boy from everything and start again critical thinking is Keith game come on now and I work for the city Troy helping families go back amen and they didn't have an education and it was a cycle because these parents who couldn't read who it only finish 7th or 8th G of my location and trying to help with homework while struggling with issues and still stuck with a come on somebody so I went back to school yes I said I'm in the wrong side of the field I need to go where it count before they been damaged yeah somebody told him they can't do anything right because I know what it is to drive past the levitated drug-infested neighborhood with people see the murder capital of the world with no windows my mind talking to the superintendent yo George Washington Carver Academy in Highland Park and at this point is in the school that's on 2nd between Manchester and the Davison freeway and it's one of those entities that helps to provide a foundation for Hannah park right now did the result of the school in Hannover great name is an anchor and the superintendent is Sylvia Browne magnificent not tell us who are your role models who your mentors well in school OFF Fifth my 5th grade teacher Miss Janet Stewart Elementary was a person who did extracurricular activities played and won thanks deal was you can't participate until you get your work done I love it and I used to run my mouth but I wanted to be a part of these plays yes yes and so it taught me early how to balance how to prioritize you can do that yeah do your work first say that when I went to high I had my counselor is the one who who open the pathway for me to go to Japan but one of things he always taught us was be early is to be on time come on now so when I went to college and I lost my mother as a freshman that's your her first quarter I had the only been in school for four months not over the past lower most people would have dropped out but it was because of the community I had and had apart, cuz it's so many please people that I go all the way back to elementary school dr. esselman and mrs. men's Miss downs and our principal and so many countless people man that poured into me it wasn't one person it was a village that said you can't you're special cuz you're Brown come on now where are roam HP will always be my home come on now cuz that's HP made me HP Tommy tenacity it told me I was somebody else I can fight against yes so when I didn't know I had people protecting time looking out for me praying for me redirecting me come on now and so tell people where my hero love my mother who was an educator at Liberty Elementary greatest praise God praise God help me without boundary come on now help me to be and so I believe that I was crazy enough to be whatever I come on I'm not call your mother's name May Kathryn Looney, Looney Clan that's still wrong through Highland Park now live in Highland Park feel a part of the community as a Looney Looney Tunes we all wrong the the Highland Park the hallways of Highland Park yeah yeah and that education. Love that Community is what I bring Eli's Washington, dad, but I'm coming home and I'm home walking through the same things that I did I look at them as the next Governor mayor of United States recharge hey that's how I want you to know how you treat yeah that's right who says that all the time is what am I ever mothers who lives in Highland Park misses Matilda Foster and everybody's child is somebody's child and they belong to God Netflix because you have opportunities to start from pre-school all the way to the 8th grade all the way to the 8th grade and so we get a minute babies and Farm in the making a difference in a life and a lot of a mine is to embrace the community so that Highland Park can adopt George Washington Carver as I'm home so that's a business is going to community volunteers provide resources for the mini needy needy families that are there uniforms for school supplies to volunteer to read around the school are taking care loud and proud so when I kids look around they don't see black enough they deal with enough to our door we want to share that they say that's right that they feel invested that people love them and when they look around we want them to see hope this is a George Washington Carver Academy in Highland Park now there are a number of persons who just been disappointed with Scoops who they don't know commercials in a talk a good talk in it pass out put signs on buses and everybody claims they can do the best parents make that invest end up bringing their child and they don't quite know if it's what the promise that has been made is going to match what the delivery is can you add the superintendent bus stops with you that's right the bus stop and you are hot in Parker and I'm a Parker came up to Highland Park University Japan travel the lieutenant governor and the governor come on somebody you have an understanding Community the city and that's so critical you know the community that you're serving in the community teachers I had security I loved it I had maintenance and Food Service God queens and when they do something wrong with correcting a child yes we not auditioning for prison addition and Four Courts at directed a child and show them away expectation for every child and every parent I'm at the end of the day that's what they brought the situation sent us to do help them make their child have a better tomorrow I love it and that's the commitment that I bring because I am Highland Park hey I am HP say that HP made me it's a different fire that I have I have a tired of passing everywhere I go and I only worked in urban areas because I wanted to give my talent yes to our key amen that they can know that somebody that look like that came from Community like them that was told what you can't be my Lord assumed that you didn't have my mama yes you can yes you can yes you can yes you can I think they can succeed and you know what when you have high expectations of young people I read a research paper years ago when I was a student University of Michigan by Roosevelt graduating things before I start doing up Journal bring on the my mother and father kept waiting for me to get into the field I put the scoop before cuz I was active with some activist groups around the country and finally got active in the doing what I was trying to do but the God is so good but that there is something about recognizing the gym of hot impart the treasure that is Highland Park and I believe that the we need to change the narrative exactly because now pawsitive about the city of Detroit that's because of the some low-down reply faintly unconstitutional illegal things that have gone on that the bankruptcy was never filed by the city was fine by Kevin the emergency manager laws unconstitutional heart she joined our lawsuit to get a vote back for the Detroit Public away somebody's phone when we consider that hot and Park like Detroit has had an a narrative around it that has been sometimes less than positive for reasons that had nothing to do with the real forces of the city exactly corporations who left who should not have left owing the city money there people who have been suffering from unreasonable water bills and some tax bills that the Harper place a hardship on it and end it it it's not fair to have people treated less than the holler it's a gym and I think some of this has been deliberate make it up less profitable area this is a major commit who ever heard of a city on Woodward right in the heart of one of America's major cities what was designed as a special City it was designed especially what the what the inside of the citizens could attend free so we need to bring back The Narrative of Glory power of x yeah the Highland Park and we have an opportunity to do that with the with these great George Washington Carver Academy that's in Highland Park in Highland Park that's right that's right the Holland Park to George Washington can live anywhere and they can live anywhere that want to come to car because their kids and parents are thirsty that looking for a quality education and the leader they can believe you want to meet this later this morning so then you can people recognize authenticity I know they do they recognize people who are real who are from you can mean anything recognize it come on now we have work to do yes a lot of work yes but we have committed people who are prepared to do the work I love it and if there prepare to do what's best for kids and they don't look at every kid that walk in the door or come on as if they're in a private school and they don't treat every parent that walk in the door is if they have Five Star Customs I love it but you got to be where you gift it to me that's it and you got to love the babies sting about them that's why everything they come with all of that and if you can't deal with that we don't need to try to find you or redirect you to it, I love it I love that is no in between when it comes to the kids is having teachers that I qualified teachers with program so they can meet the needs of kids turning to the school my momma Sylvan Learning going to be there doing the day I love it and they're going to pull students out who struggle with math and I lower grade says they can get skills that they need they may not put them on the bus we're not telling their parents where they can go we going to create that program creating a mentorship Graham does mentoring and tutoring I'm not just going to you until you do your homework but it's going to be my responsibility to go to the teacher and ask didn't get turned in and I love her and to come on now because that's what it take if I knew how to do my work I went be in tutoring hello and if I was responsible I wouldn't be struggle of it so we going to give them what they need Brown service yeah we're also partner with new center community social workers and crisis managers to the school excellent what is Crisis we haven't had anything our kids spends crisis everyday when a drive-by happen or divorce separation of parents that's trauma they come to school and expected to focus on learn you can be a middle school to be stopped by police and be stopped come now they need to know to handle it handle it and they also need to know that if I have an issue yes I can go talk to somebody come on give you a card and tell you tell your parent I love it no I want to bring somebody from the community in the schools God so these are things that I've done in less than a week wow cuz I hit the ground wow what's best for kids to service the students to service the parent I love it so I'm reaching out to community members to see can we get a GED program for parents praise God man at a type of things that you get when you come to George Washington Carver because when you are park or you understand what the babies need that's right Disney and then we try to make it happen that's it that's not what what is the address of George Washington Carver can address is 14510 2nd Avenue okay enaz Highland Park boy 2:03 and it is there a phone number people can call yes that's 33865 0 to 4 we are having open enrollment every day from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and it's K through 8 8th grade if someone wanted to enroll their child today with what they need to bring for a Roman you need a birth certificate the last report card and your driver's license record have it and you want to pick up an application so you can begin the process and ask cancel get a tour of the school the office is open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. to go to all questions you can also go online amen be able to download the application is a grandmother or grandfather or onto your godmother who is a guardian care of children who happen to Van that age range Pre K through 8 and they sometimes rearing of children has fallen on some other than the mother and the father from The Cab solutely we encourage them to come and bring the program's if they don't have everything when they when they we will work with them to find out that help them get the documents so they can register the student excellent excellent it's so wonderful to have someone from leading the George Washington Carver Academy with this point it's the only academic institution left in Highland Park in the city proper Highland Park Desert School by George Washington Carver Academy it deserves a superintendent superintendent Sylvia Browne Hooser who is the park Sharon Taylor is in the Chuck Gordon's in the doctor writes and the doctor come on now dr. Brian all of those who were my principles yes yes let us and taught us and and directed us in provided programs we have programs that other public schools in have they say you didn't have Windows but we had air conditioning when will Williams in air with a Atrium and a wing that had extracurricular activity fat ass and you better say how did all those things with just a part of what we did so if you weren't prepared for college you would prepare for a trade it's all the way in the seventies and eighties Highland Park had the philosophy to prepare kids for Success excellent and so that's the thing that we want to bring back to ensure that what we're doing is preparing it for says not just a job but a career to be a good standing citizen to understand character to understand what it is to be a leader whatever you be just be a leader essay it whatever professing you are you going to rise because cream when you doing what you love the money will come because you're doing your best you're doing some of you love so you can't help but to be good at it what's the things you want to power and teach our kids and and help develop that in them that it doesn't matter what you seen or what your story is your record is clean so you have an opportunity to rewrite the story I love it people try to write my story now they couldn't write your story can you grab my purse from Hollow you must get a good at calculus had trigonometry I got that from the halls of Highland Park they have to go to another school say that I have foreign language I had all of the things that I needed for a quality holistic educated at say that that my creative side it nurtured my leadership I had no choice have it that live in look at you now superintendent cited excited excited to be excited to be in Highland set a goal of that's what life can be after this is why education is important so I can do something different yeah having people that believe that I will be better and that I can be more success I
